This book is an excellent resource for sound doctrine and theology. The content is especially valuable to Church's who are now updating and reviewing their own doctrinal statements. You see, as culture develops/devolves it becomes necessary for the Christian community to respond to the changes in culture and articulate that response through the Church's dogma.For instance, many churches do not have an articulated view on marriage, manhood, womanhood, sexuality because until very recent times their has been an understood and accepted perspective and practice pertaining to these issues. However, the culture we live in has redefined the social and moral norms for many of these prior mentioned lifestyles. Thus, church's need a resource like the Gospel As Center as a litmus test for their own doctrinal statement. Church's will be able to look at their own doctrinal statement and measure to see if it covers all the essentials that the Gospel As Center covers. Likewise, it could be that a Church has held some non-essentials as essentials. It is helpful to compare ones doctrinal statement to such a carefully articulated statement like the one assembled in this book, the Gospel As center, so that a Church body might determine if they have too narrowed the doctrinal expectations that define their biblical community.Clearly, I highly recommend this resource as a valued doctrinal source for biblical community.The Gospel As Center contains papers on the following individual topics:1. These quotes point not only to the distinct style of writting but the unique continuity in purpose of making the gospel central to Christian dogma.In Richard Phillips chapter on Can We Know the Truth, he comments, "God created the world to display his glory, and he created humans to know him and reflect his glory."Colin Smith writes on his chapter, The Plan, "Redeeming sinners from all nations through Jesus Christ was God's plan from the beginning."Bryan Chapell says, "God the Father anointed Jesus to be his special envoy to provide his holiness for humanity."Sandy Willson states, "The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the crowning event of all God's mighty works of redemption" and later says, "He ascended to the right hand of God, forever safe, forever secure, forever happy, forever King."These four quotes selected from four separate chapters emphasize the unique theological continuity within this work. The Gospel As Center is a book for ministry leaders and lay people. As the title suggest it will renew your faith and have you take a good look at ministry practices. It mentions the Gospel Coalition which you can get more information by going to [...]. It is a great resource for me to receive sound teaching in troubling times. The book was written by contributors of the Gospel Coalition and basically goes over the doctrine statement. I have found that most churches have a doctrine statement however, many of their members do not understand or they may not understand the focus of the churchs' mission due to their doctrine statement. This read covers many doctrine issues and our fight for the truth. It does claim rightfully so that none of us will know the complete truth but the Lord does reveal in his word truth that we can know and knowledge of him that we can live out so others may know him as well. What I found interesting that truth is authoriative. Is that why the church may be suffering and will suffer greatly in the future? The crisis of truth in our postmodern times: our society dogmatically rejects truth in theory but cannot live that way in practice. (page 28). Reading the word of course is way for us to know our King and Lord, however, if we are going to read the bible rightly , we must see it in all its parts as it relates to Christ. How it relates to our hearts set against God, truth, his authority and then you begin to see our problem of sin. This book offers truth, the gospel, redemption and with redemption hope

The Gospel as Center, edited by D.A. Carson & Timothy Keller, features chapters by influential Christian leaders from a variety of denominations. Their purpose is to clarify, unify and strengthen the gospel message in the church today. Their hope is that this will stem the tide of cultural in roads into our faith and practice. It's an excellent resource book for concerned Christians.

This is a very informative and complicated read. At least for me. I am recommending it to my serious friends.

As any book which is edited by Carson and Keller would be a good if not great book is to be expected. The content is excellent but I am wondering who is editing the editors for grammar. In the first two chapters I found three spelling and grammar errors. To be honest, after reading at least twenty books written or edited by Carson I am disappointed. I love the Gospel Coalition, so these mistakes are shocking to me.Again, excellent content, but scholars like Carson and Keller need to take more time with this material. I am a former college English Composition teacher and any student in a large writing project got two freebies on spelling and grammar before the red ink would begin to hack away at the grade.Come on guys!!!

Wonderful articles written to enlarge the excellent foundation documents from the Gospel Coalition. Excellent as a 'first step' or overview of the major foundations of the true Christian faith.

Over the last two years, I've begun to spend a lot of time as a self-taught mixologist at home and purchased most of the highly rated and recommended cocktail books. This has without a doubt become my favorite and go to book when I'm looking to make a new cocktail. I recently hosted a cocktail party and of the nine drinks on my menu, 6 of them came from this book. While a lot of other books rely on glossy pictures, this is a welcome change, focused on the recipes and brief descriptions from Sasha's wife and friends about the impetus behind each cocktail. One thing that I really appreciate is the fact that this book doesn't include tons of recipes requiring a lot of miscellaneous or unique items to make. If you have a fairly well stocked home bar, you can make almost anything in here.

No name-dropping, no star f-cking. If those words carry meaning for you, then so too do the drink recipes in this book. If not yet, for the reader of this book they soon will. Here, at last, is Milk & Honey resurrected on the page. One can, if they were lucky, recall the short, candlelit bar and the quiet excitement of ducking in off of a Chinatown street and being served essentially the perfect drink for whatever your palate in what was the most exciting bar in the world during its time. The book is not just Milk & Honey, of course. It is Little Branch and the John Dory Oyster Bar and Dutch Kills and White Star and everywhere he touched and everyone he worked with gathered up in a collection of recipes and elegiac words. Sasha Petraske left the world too young, but as an old soul he left behind an entire culture of service and drink preparation that lives on in his many acolytes. This book collects, essentially, the favorite recipes of Sasha and those who worked with and for him, each introduced with a short paragraph explaining the drinks background and meaning and seasonality. The framing idea of the book is the framing idea of mixology as Sasha and his ventures expressed it: every cocktail is a variation of one of five types of drinks: the Old Fashioned, the Martini or Manhattan, the Sour, the Highball, or the Fix. There are five chapters of recipes he enjoyed (largely designed by his acolytes or developed in concert with him, and attributed appropriately) with an additional chapter on non alcoholic and sweeter large format drinks. The recipes reflect the elegance and simplicity that Mr. Petraske stressed: unlike other recent bar books that seek to be the last word on all cocktail making and which call in each recipe for very specific brands, here liquors are specified by type and perhaps origin, but in the context of a simply presented list of ingredients followed by detailed instructions on assembly and only occasionally the introducing paragraph will name a particular brand. An aesthete and something of an obsessive compulsive when it came to lists, Petraske would doubtless be pleased by this layout. Each facing page contains an impressionistic line drawing of the drink that reflects the ratios called for in the recipe. Some of the great classics are here, but the recipe reflects the particular way Sasha preferred them, so too are the more famous originals of his and his extended bar family. The beginning and end of the book contains framing essays, some by Petraske but others by his wife and friends describing the philosophy of work and dress that Petraske lived and sought to impart upon others. Reflecting his particular sense of humor, cocktails for cats are also described. You can find Petraske's work living on in his colleagues now bringing their own voice to the great bars of LA, Chicago, NYC (Attaboy, the now transformed original Milk and Honey space led by Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy), Melbourne, and London, or you can recreate these recipes at home. I think that this book will give you recipes that feel both familiar and surprisingly new at the same time, the kind you would get when you let a great bartender who knows what you love make a drink, bartenders choice. While Petraske is missed, this book is not to be.

I used to work for Sasha and bought the book as a gift for friends who love cocktails and love to host guests. I was shocked to see all of his tricks and secrets published in the book and thought that the info and the recipes were perfectly laid out for regular people to learn and execute the craft. He was a perfectionist, an artist and a true professional, now everyone can get a glimpse into his approach to cocktail making.

Excellent book with classic and modern cocktails. This book does a good job at keeping Sasha Petraske's legacy alive for the next generation. More than a recipe book, this also outlines Mr Petraske's philosophy of serving customers and running successful cocktail service.

I hardly ever write reviews on Amazon, but after spending a few months with this book, I was compelled to. This book is absolutely worth the money you'll spend and the anecdotes throughout (paired with each cocktail) are a wonderful compliment. I've worked my way through about 75% of the cocktails in this book and it will remain a staple at my bar for a long, long time.

Liked the book. I'm novice in cocktails making "business" but it was really interesting reading and some interesting tips.

Such an enjoyable read. So much more than cocktails! Really conveys how intense Sasha was about making truly exquisite drinks. There is also a great section about essentials in home bar building (ingredients, not construction) and tons of interesting anecdotes.

I have bought three copies, two have been gifted away so far.

Bertman, professor emeritus of classics at the University of Windsor, has made a useful contribution to Facts On File's Handbook to Life series. Covering the lives of Assyrians, Babylonians, and Sumerians from around 3500 to 500 B.C.E., the book is arranged topically, with chapters on geography, archaeology, government, religion, language and literature, arts, and daily life, among other subjects. Each chapter has citations to the extensive bibliography. Most of the works in the larger bibliography are technical and specialized, but a "Note to the Reader" lists several popular works that could be found in a larger public library. Bertman's writing is formal but accessible, with touches of dry humor.

Subsections within the chapters deal with more specific topics. In the chapter on government, there are capsule biographies of political leaders, mostly kings. The chapter on archaeology provides a list of archaeologists who have made major discoveries in the region. Gods and goddesses are described in the chapter on religion. There is an interesting concluding chapter about the legacy of Mesopotamia and how it endures. A brief section on Aramaic-speaking Chaldeans who migrated from an ancient village in Iraq to Detroit in the twentieth century suggests that the legacy is more alive than we realize. Bertman notes, too, how many archaeological sites have been put at risk by recent political and military actions in the region.

The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs and line drawings, which should copy well. Appendixes include a chronological table and a list of museums with major Mesopotamian collections. A useful purchase for medium-sized to large public libraries and academic libraries with undergraduate Middle Eastern ancient history classes.
